coprophagia treatmentBy Lisa Duff from Hanmer, Ontario, Canada on April 19, 2006 Category: Thiamine hydrochloride <div>Hi,</div> <div> </div> <div>I just purchased a product - 8in1 Deter Coprophagia Treatment, but have not given it to my dog yet. These tablets contain Natural fermented vegetable extract, thiamine hydrochloride, and Capsicum Oleoresin. </div> <div>Are there any risks or side effect of these tablets?</div> <div>My puppy is 15 weeks old and has been eating his feces for several weeks now.</div> <div> </div> <div>We are not home during the day, so it's hard to prevent this or break the habit.</div> <div> </div> <div>Hopefully you can provide a quick response, as I do not want to give these tablets to him if there are any serious risks or side effects. </div> <div> </div> <div>Thank you</div> <div>Lisa Duff</div> <div>Hanmer, Ontario, Canada</div> |
Regarding Deter RiskHi Saw your query - am in the same boat - our dog is now just a little over 3 months of age and she does the same thing - she is a ShihTzu cross Lhasa Apso and having had a ShihTzu before this is a common thing with them. Frankly its a disgusting habit I was hoping to stop but I am using way over the recommended dosage on the package in order to get her to not eat her feces !! We had Forbid from the VET but she suggested the Deter since Forbid is much pricier and our vet is conscious of the cost to the customer ( unusual HUH ? ) anyway the Forbid was working somewhat and same with the Deter but since I am overdosing with the Deter I don't see the dollar benefit and hubby is worried it may make her sick. I looked up two of the drugs in Deter and one is oil from Chili Peppers and when digested it makes the outcome taste fiery hot and the other is just Vitamin B and from what I know from my own medical history Vitamin B is a water soluble vitamim that doesnt stay in your blood stream - you eliminate what you don't need so it isnt toxic but maybe the Thiamine is for dogs - I dunno - am assuming the Fermented Vegetable extract tastes nasty after digestion as well - sure wish there was someone who knew how to break this nasty habit !!
