I have been on Junel 1/20 for almost 3 weeks. My doctor advised me that after 2 weeks my husband and I won't have to worry about using other means of protection to prevent prenancy. When I picked up the prescription the pharmasist advised that we should ALWAYS use other means of protection while taking this pill due to it being a low hormone. I called the doctor told her what the pharmacy mentioned to me and she is still insisting that we don't have to use other means after 2 weeks of being on the pill. My husband and I are very concerned because we don't want any children right now. With the conflict of information we aren't sure what to do and don't see the importance of taking the pill if we still have to use other protection at the same time. So I guess my question is, do we sill need to use other means of protection while taking the pill? How long after being the pill can we stop using other means?

Your pharmacist misinformed you. The FDA has approved the amount of estrogen in Junel (20 mcg) as an effective means of birth control. That means that even though the amount of estrogen is lower than some other birth control pills, it is still very effective against pregnancy. You ONLY need to use a backup method of birth control for 7 days such as a condom if you miss two pills in a row or when you first begin taking birth control. Hope this helps!
