nocturnal leg crampsBy carol allan from Aurora, Ontario, Canada on January 10, 2006 Category: Quinine sulfate Hi there, I suffer from leg and feet cramps periodically. My doctor prescribed Quinine Sulfate 200 mg. at bedtime. As I hate taking pills, I have only used them when I get the cramps and it's taken me almost two years to use 30. I always thought it was when I drank red wine but lately that's certainly not been the case. I have just turned 60 and am in good health and not on any drugs except daily calcium. My question is, when I do get the cramps - and they're so bad I feel like my leg is going to snap - I get up in the night and take two which is usually all I need, occasionally I've had to take another two about an hour later if the cramps have not settled down. Is this harmful to me to take them like this or should I definitely be taking them one at night and see if this prevents me from having cramps at all? Thanks kindly, Carol Allan. P.S. last night was especially bad and that's why I went on line to see what info I could find. |
Leg cramps replyI am also 60 years old and have leg and toes cramps at night. The doctor told me to take one quinine pill every night to prevent the cramps. It is better to prevent the cramps, because they can get worse.I.Fox By Fox from U.S.A. on April 24, 2006 | Reply | leg crampswhat is cause of leg cramps. for me, it can't be lack of calcium because i take same daily. do have a diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica and have been on monthly decrease in prednisone. cramps in toes and front leg lower muscles seems to come on at night of a day of using legs i.e. garden, walk etc. By beth from usa on August 11, 2006 | Reply | MsHi, I have been suffering from toe and leg cramps for a couple of years. It got so bad, my Doctor prescribed Quinine. I took it for some 6 months and then decided I didn't need it only to find the cramps returned. I was worried about taking Quinine and halved the dose but, 2 weeks later, I got this ringing in the ears and have been off Quinine for 2 weeks now. The ringing in my ears has not gone, any ideas what this is??? I put my cramps down to lack of salt, my blood work confirmed this but, the Doctor did not seem to think I needed a salt substitute. I say this because I live in Australia and perspire so much I have no salt left in my body? When I lick my top lip, there is no salt. And when I am doing house work, perspiring, my feet cramp so badly, I have to stop because I can't move with the pain. I, (unfortunately) smoke, and have two glasses of red each night. Can anyone out there explain why I still have the ringing in the ears which was definately caused by the Quinine? And is there anything that can be done to make it go away? Sincerely, Nicolette Hammond
