I have a friend who has been taking sulfazine for a number of years for chrons disease. She has a dry cough and sometimes she almost chokes. The cough is not constant but is always there, that is every day. Somes days it is a worse cough. Could sulfazine cause the cough as I did read where dry throat is a side affect. Could any vitamin or herb be irritating the sulfazine? My friend also has gained quite a bit of weight over the years which could just be her diet but I am aware that many medications cause weight gain. Thank you for any help you can give me so I can turn over the info to her. C Sabin csabin@san.rr.com

Dry cough caused by sulfazine response

My mother-in-law had a cough exactly like you described. She had the cough from April 2005 until January 2006. She would start with a dry cough and then begin to choke. In early January, she had to see a hemotologist for a condition unrelated to the cough; however, she mentioned the cough to the hemotologist. He immediately asked her if she was on Lisinopril for high blood pressure. She was. There are various other drugs in this family that also cause coughing. He changed her medication and told her the cough should gradually stop and be totally gone within 4 weeks. At approximately 4 weeks, she realized that she hadn’t coughed for two days!!
