How quickly can side effects appear from taking Gentamicin?

My father is in the hospital being treated for infection in his bone. He suffered a compound fracture of his wrist which then led to infection. He is being treated with gentamicin as well as two other antibiotics. He is extremely worried about the side effects and is wondering how long it could take for the side effects to appear of they are going to. What are the chances that he will suffer these side effects. He will be talking to his doctor in the morning but is wanting as many opinions and facts as he can get.
Thank you.

Dear Chrissy,
I hope your father is doing great and that he is "off" Gentamicin without side effect.
I had Gent during 5 weeks. Vestibular disorder started during the third week.
For long treatment such as mine the chance of having a side effect such as vestibular disorder or hearing loss is about 25% !
Anything I can help you with please let me know.
It all happened to me back in 1999 and with the years I became somewhat of an expert. Unfortunately once you do have vestibular disorder there is absolutely nothing that can be done.
Sincerely Yours,
