Can Thorazine be taken on an as needed basis; or must it be taken per specific daily doses?

I would like to understand more thoroughly the reason for the perscription of Thorazine. Just what mood behaviors, or physical/mental processes are going on that dictate the need for this specific drug. How and what are the manifestations that suggest the requirement of the drug; and how does the drug ameloriate the debilitating symptoms? What supportive data is available to move the prevailing medical judgement toward initating treatment by use of Thorazine? What is considered a "normal" dose and do people "live on" this drug even after hospitalization is terminated? Are there any addictive qualities & how and by whom is this treatment supervisesd...general MDs or Psychiatrists?
If this medical drug treatment has been in practice for thirty years, more or less -- Is it ever possible that an individual would one day be able to successfully live his life without it?
