Taking the active pills in order?

My pills were prescribed by a women's clinic a year ago. The nurse told me she was writing me a 2 year prescription since I've been on it so long. But on Sunday, when I was due to start my next pack, the pharmacy informed me the prescription expire, and neither I or the pharmacy has gotten a call back or a refill authorization.
In the meantime, could I take pills from a pack that I had a few months ago where I missed a few pills, or would taking the "active" pills out of order like that not be effective?
