What side effects may I expect after long use clobetasol Propionate

I am a 66 yr old white male and I have been using Clobetasol Propionate (Ointment) USP, 0.05% for over 5 years on a regular basis. I apply the ointment on my fingers and hands twice a day, morning and night. I was advised to use non-latex gloves over the ointment during the day and white cotton gloves during the night. The reason for usage is because my fingers will crack and hurt somewhat like a papercut. Most often the cuts (cracks) become very painful and I cannot use my fingers very effectively.  When this occurs an application at night will almost heal by morning or late afternoon.  Most times it takes about 2 days for the areas to heal completely.

For the past 6-8 months the itching begins then the cracking or "cuts" follow. It usually starts on one or two fingers but I do experience it on my thumbs also. MOST OF THE TIME IT BEGINS AROUND THE FINGER OR THUMB TIPS ON THE INSIDE OF THE FINGERS. However, it does begin on the outside of my fingers right below my finger nails rather frequently.  I have had it also at the base of my fingers on the inside.

When my hands are healed (not cut or cracked), and I begin tasks around the house (tools, boxes, dusty areas, shuffling thru papers or MOST ANYTHING I DO THAT REQUIRES USING MY HANDS, I can bet that by evening my fingers will begin to itch and crack.

I operate an office out of my house and even when I do a lot of work on the computer keyboard my fingers will beging to itch and crack.

It has become rather frustrating and nerve-racking that I cannot use my fingers when I need to. The Dermatologists indicates that they have "no clue" what the problem is. They keep prescribing Clobetasol Propionate to the tune of 100 GM per month.

After doing research on the product I find that it is not a good idea to use it more than 2 weeks. I HAVE BEEN USING IT FOR OVER 5 YEARS.  What side effects (internally or externally) may I expect to see after such an extended period of time. What would be your advice??

Thank you

Archie Branham

What side effects may I expect after long use clobetasol Propionate

I am one of the user of clobetasone oitment. I used it for 2 years to clar up my eczema. During the period, my eczema never clear up. It will go away for a few days, but came back with vengeance and ended up I have to put more. My condition is worsening. I also developed purigo all over my exttremities, the worst were on my legs. This take up to 3 years to be clared. A very painful experience.

Until Feb 2012, I found out this medication shokd not be used for long term but my derm never explained this to me, infact advised me to use as and when I needed it. I stopped using it immediately when I found out the side effectd of clobetasone.

I am now under topical sterois withdrawal (TSW), a very painful syndrome where my body has become addicted to clobatasone and needed higher dose of it. And stopping clobetasone for good , causing my slin to burn (sevely burn) and skin flaking all over body, I can't bend my hands and legs due to extreme dry skin around the area. I have been homebound for nearly 12 months now, very debilitating and unable to do house chores , go to worj , function like normal.

If you experience this, you are the victim of over usage of topical steroid. Please visit ITSAN.org , an independent group of sufferers that undergone TSW due to long usage of topical steroid.

Someone / sonmebody must stop the prolonged use of steroid as treatment for eczema. It does not help..in my case, I was sent to dark hell due to long term use of clobetasone , a ver potent class 7 steroid.
