Why are gentamicin levels taken for a neonate?

What is the significance of gentamicin levels taken in the neonate?

Gentamicin Levels in neonates

Gentamicin is a very powerful antibiotic, that can cause severe reactions if not given correctly.  The drug can be very hard on kidney's and it could also cause hearing loss, blurred vision, head ache, vertigo, muscle twitching etc. So having said that, gentamicin levels are checked on neonates because of the problems mentioned above and the fact that kidneys and other organs are not as powerful or capable as adults in neonates therefore, it is important to monitor the levels of Gentamicin to prevent any kidney damage, toxicity, and any other reactions. Talk to your doctor about Gentamicin before, or during the treatment with the drug.
