rabies vaccination

please could you advice me on rab rabies vaccination. i am a nurse and was requested by a patient who is visiting zambia for hep a, hep b, polio, typhiod, and rabies vaccinations to be done.

in the BNF it stated that rab vaccination should be given by IM in the deltoid. it did not state that no other vaccinations should be given at the same time.

so i commenced treatment one day of hep a, typhoid and polio. requested the patient to come back to recieve hep b and rabies vaccination 1/52 later.

he will need a course of three injections of rab rabies vaccination. 1ml day 0, 1ml on day 7, 1ml on day 28. to have a course.

after the rabbies vaccination, my patient felt fant. which i had to deal with immediatley. made him lie down with legs raised. i believe he was just having a fainting episode and not a reaction to the vaccine. but now i am home i am worring over this patient. i adviced him if he felt unwell atall to contact the NHS direct, or the A&E department.

what are the chances of a patient having a reaction to the vaccination once away from a health department? i made sure he did not leave me until a good half hour after having the vaccination. to make sur that he was ok. i checked his bp which was ok and made sure that he felt fine before leaving.

i hope you can answer my questions, and please if possible could you send any relevant info on the vaccine, as i do not often get requests for this vaccine, and would like to aquire more knowledge into the subject.

thank you.

suzi
