I am pretty new to the pill, and i have a question. I have only been using the pill for about 3 months now. Today, sunday, i am supposed to start the placebo pills, but i also had unprotected sex today. I was wondering now if this is risky to do on the day that i start the placebo pills? the last pill i took was at 12 am sat night/sunday morning, usually right before i go to bed. i am nervous that there is still a chance of pregnancy if i had unprotected sex on the day that i am starting the placebo pills. i usualyy dont get my period until like tuesday of the week i start the placebo pills. Please tell me what i should do, should i start a new pack and skip my period this month? how unhealthy is that? please please help! thanks! Jessica

When not to have sex on the pill

When you are on birth control pills it takes about two weeks to one month for you to become fully protected. The period you get when you start the white reminder pills (placebo) has no ovulated follicle and so if you have taken all of the colored pills at the same time everyday there is almost no chance of you being pregnant. Once you have taken the pill according to directions for a month you can have sex at anytime and be 98% protected from becoming pregnant just so long as you don't miss doses.

When Not to have sex while your on the pill

The only time I don't have sex when I am on the pill is while I am on my period.  When you first start taking the pill, you should use some other method of birth control (like a condom) till you have finished your first cycle (21 or 28 days, whichever one you are on)  to insure maximum protection when using "the pill".  Try to take your pills at the same time every night (I take mine after dinner) say around 7:00 pm.  Try not to miss any doses and if you do follow the instructions that came with your birth control pills.  I always say, "When in doubt, use a condom".  Works for me.
