Bromfed DM overdose, long term side effects, babyBy Bertie Adams from Plaquemine, Louisiana, USA on September 12, 2006 Category: Bromfed DM (Oral) RE: 5 MONTH OLD--PHARMACIST ERROR ON DOSAGE FOR BROMFED DM BEING A NEW MOTHER, MY DAUGHTER DID NOT RECOGNIZE THE SIDE EFFECT PROBLEM; SHE ADMINISTERED 1 TEASPOON BROMFED DM 4 X'S PER DAY ACCORDING TO THE PRESCRIPTION DIRECTIONS FOR APPROXIMATELY 3-4 DAYS. I BABYSAT FOR HIM ONE SATURDAY NIGHT AND THOUGHT THAT THE DOSAGE WAS KIND OF EXTREME; SO I ADMINISTERED A LOWER DOSE AROUND 8:30 P.M., BUT STILL TOO MUCH. THE BABY WAS SO HYPER, COULD NOT KEEP STILL, BREATHING WAS HEAVY, EYES OPENED WIDE--I REALIZED THAT HE WAS PROBABLY HAVING A REACTION TO THE MEDICINE. IT FINALLY PASSED BY 2:00 AM. ON MONDAY WE TOOK HIM TO THE DOCTOR--WHO EXPLAINED THAT HE JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE HIS "FIRST TRIP" WERE HIS WORDS. HE SAID TO CONTINUE THE MEDICINE BUT AT 1/4 OF A TEASPOON. HE SUGGESTED WE SPEAK TO THE PHARMACIST AND IF THE SCRIPT WAS INCORRECT, HE WANTED THE PHARMACIST TO FAX HIM A COPY. WE CHECKED WITH THE PHARMACIST, WHO ADMITTED THAT HE HAD MADE THE MISTAKE AND ASKED US TO RETURN THE BOTTLE SO THAT HE COULD CHANGE THE LABEL--WE DID NOT DO THAT AND WE STILL HAVE THE BOTTLE WITH THE ORIGINAL LABEL. HOWEVER, EVEN WITH THE LOWER DOSE NOW, HE STILL HAS THE SAME REACTION. NATURALLY, WE WILL NOT CONTINUE THIS MEDICINE. BUT OUR CONCERN IS: HE HAVING BEEN GIVEN HALF THE BOTTLE AT THAT HIGH DOSAGE--WHAT COULD BE THE LONG TERM EFFECTS, IF ANY?--ESPECIALLY IN REGARDS TO BRAIN FUNCTION, SIGHT, BREATHING. I STILL FIND HIS BREATHING IS DIFFERENT, BUT AT THIS POINT, DON'T KNOW IF IT IS JUST THE COLD THAT HE HAS. THE DOCTOR HAS NOW PUT HIM ON OMNICEF FOR OUTER EAR INFECTION. HE HAS BEEN REALLY SLEEPY SINCE OFF THE BROMFED--WOULD THIS BE A REACTION TO COMING DOWN FROM THAT MEDICATION? ANY LIGHT YOU COULD SHED ON THIS INCIDENT, WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. RESPECTFULLY, BERTIE ADAMS |
