Effects of long term use of phenobarbitol

Have there been any studies on the effects on the body of long term (20+ years) use of phenobarbitol for seizure control? What, if any, are the conclusions?

I would be especially interested in possible effects on the liver and/or pancreas.

Re: Effects of long term use of phenobarbitol

My wife has had a general decline in her health for the last ten years. She is 58 years old and stopped taking phenobarb 8 years ago, after commencing it at 15yo.. She has diabeties ( 20 years) osteoarthriis, Locked shoulder, sleep apnea , chirosis of the liver and has just had her gall bldder removed. One foot is has had broken bones for two years and doctors are unsure if it is charcot or diabeties - one has suggested it was due to phenobarb. No doctor, whilst agreeing these effects relate to the use of phenobarb will not put it in writing.
I would be interested in hearing why you raised the liver problem

32 years of taking phenobarbital and the effects when you stop taking it.

I have taken Phenobarbital for 33 years and been under treatment for epilepsy. My cousin is a neurosurgeon that specializes in epilepsy and I tried to apply for the surgery so that I could be Rx free, but I found out that after a person takes Phenobarbital for a period of six weeks to three months that there is no turning back. Phenobarbital is a medicine that your body will crave as it does for oxygen and water, and if you stop taking the Rx your body is most likely going to to go into a remission of some sort until you get the levels balanced out once more. Phenobarbital is a very old Rx that even JFK took for pain. This medicine has so many side effects that doctors are trying to give patients other options as far as prescriptions. As a person that is very familiar with how this Rx woks I will tell you I very rarely have a seizure and I can meditate my way out of one most of the time, but within the past year a company physician wanted me off the Rx and on to something new so in order to return to work I did as he requested, but I warned him what would happen if they were to try and ween me off and sure enough within three weeks I began having seizures. I had more than 60 seizures in one week and that was only taking half the dosage that I use to take. The following week I had a stroke. I immediately began taking the Phenobarbital at the same dosage I use to take it at and within a few weeks I was back to myself. This is a very serious medicine that one cannot stop taking just because.
