MUCINEX VS. ZYRTECBy KAY WEAVER from mt. vernon, texas on May 15, 2006 Category: Mucinex (Oral) I HAVE BEEN TAKING ZYRTEC TO CONTROL MY ALLERGY ATTACKS, SEASONAL AND CHEMICAL ALLERGIES, FOR SEVERAL YEARS. I WAS TREATED BY A P.A. FOR A SINUS INFECTION LAST WEEK. SHE GAVE ME ANTIBIOTICS AND TOOK ME OFF THE ZYRTEC AND HAD ME TO START ON MUCINEX, OVER THE COUNTER.(TWICE DAILY) SHE SAID ZYRTEC DRIES OUT THE NASAL PASSAGE AND KEEPS THE BUG IN THERE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT MUCINEX HAS TO DO WITH ALL THE ALLERGIES I HAVE. |
Why MucinexZyrtec is a decongestant so it does lower the amout of secretions in the nasal cavities. Mucinex makes the drainage more fluid so that it allows the secretions to leave the sinus instead of sticking. So, if you have an infection, it makes sense for you to try to increase the flow of fluid away from the infection and allow the antibiotics to kill the bacterial colonies. Once the infection is gone you may be told to start on the decongestant again to control the production of secretions. By Paul from Glendale, AZ on May 27, 2006 | Reply | Mr.Zyrtec is a very effective antihistimine. It may have some very mild decongestant effects, but its main property is a antihistimine (anti-allegry). I have been told to get on an antihistimine by my MD because I kept getting sinus infections. Mucinex is just an expectorant to loosen mucos so you can get it out easier. I would ask your MD if you were not instructed to get back on the antihistimine since it has worked well for you. Mucinex wont do anything for your allergies, the Zyrtec will. By James from Florida on February 15, 2007 | Reply | Mucinex or Zytec for Post Nasal Drip?Thank you for your description of these 2 medicines and what what they do. Which of these two medicines would you prescribe for Post Nasal Drip? I need to find something strong and effective. It's almost impossible for me to sleep at night with this condition. Flonase and Allegra D are not working for me very well. I am taking them together. Perhaps you could recommend a nasal spray also. Thank you. By David on May 09, 2016 | Reply | Write a Reply |
