Side effects (if any) of longterm use of Nicotine polacrilex gum

My husband has been using 2mg of nicotine polacrilex gum for 3 years. He chews 2-3 pieces in an hour. He is 66 years old and has high blood pressure which has become elevated in the past few months. I understand that this product was developed for short term use (up to 3 months) with a gradual reduction in the amount used per hour. Are there any side effects or problems created by using this product over a long period of time (years)?
