Action/Kinetics: A nonsteroidal antiandrogen that competitively inhibits the action of androgens by binding to androgen receptors in the cytosol in target tissues. Well absorbed after PO administration; food does not affect the rate or amount absorbed. Metabolized in the liver, and both parent drug and metabolites are eliminated in the urine and feces. t 1/2: 5.8 days. Mean steady-state concentration in prostatic cancer: 8.9 mcg/mL.

Uses: In combination therapy with a leutinizing hormone -releasing hormone analog for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer.

Contraindications: Pregnancy.

Special Concerns: Use with caution in clients with moderate to severe hepatic impairment and during lactation. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children.

Side Effects: GI: Constipation, N&V;, diarrhea, anorexia, dyspepsia, rectal hemorrhage, dry mouth, melena. CNS: Dizziness, paresthesia, insomnia, anxiety, depression, decreased libido, hypertonia, confusion, neuropathy, somnolence, nervousness. GU: Gynecomastia, nocturia, hematuria, UTI, impotence, urinary incontinence, urinary frequency, impaired urination, dysuria, urinary retention, urinary urgency. CV: Hot flashes (most common), hypertension, angina pectoris, CHF. Metabolic: Peripheral edema, hyperglycemia, weight loss or gain, dehydration, gout. Musculoskeletal: Myasthenia, arthritis, myalgia, leg cramps, pathologic fracture. Respiratory: Dyspnea, increased cough, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, rhinitis, lung disorder. Dermatologic: Rash, sweating, dry skin, pruritus, alopecia. Hematologic: Anemia, hypochromic and iron deficiency anemia. Body as a whole: General pain, back pain, asthenia, pelvic pain, abdominal pain, chest pain, flu syndrome, edema, neoplasm, fever, neck pain, chills, sepsis. Miscellaneous: Infection, bone pain, headache, breast pain, diabetes mellitus.

Laboratory Test Alterations: Alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, AST, ALT, bilirubin, BUN, liver enzyme tests. Hemoglobin, white cell count.

Drug Interactions: Bicalutamide may displace coumarin anticoagulants from their protein-binding sites, resulting in an increased anticoagulant effect.

How Supplied: Tablet: 50 mg

Dosage
?Tablets Prostatic carcinoma.
50 mg (1 tablet) once daily (morning or evening) in combination with an LHRH analog with or without food.
