Classification: Retinoid

Action/Kinetics: Retinoid binds to and activates all known intracellular retinoid receptor subtypes. Upon activation, the receptors regulate the expression of genes that control cellular differentiation and proliferation in both healthy and cancerous cells. Inhibits growth of Kaposi's sarcoma cells in vitro. Little is absorbed through the skin.

Uses: Treat cutaneous lesions in AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to retinoids. Use when systemic treatment of Kaposi's sarcoma is needed (i.e., 10 new sarcoma lesions in the prior month, symptomatic lymphedema, symptomatic pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma, symptomatic visceral involvement). Lactation.

Special Concerns: Safety and efficacy have not been determined in children or in clients 65 years of age or older.

Side Effects: Dermatologic: Rash (erythema, scaling, irritation, redness, dermatitis), pain, burning pain, pruritus, exfoliative dermatitis, paresthesia, edema, inflammation, vesiculation, skin disorder (excoriation, cracking, scabbing, crusting, drainage, eschar, fissure, oozing).

Drug Interactions: Increased toxicity when combined with (DEET) N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide, a common component of insect repellents.

How Supplied: Gel: 0.1%

Dosage
?Gel Kaposi's sarcoma cutaneous lesions.
Initial: Apply b.i.d. Can increase frequency of application to t.i.d. or q.i.d., according to individual lesion tolerance.
