TELITHROMYCIN (Oral) (Tablet) is used for the Treatment
Telithromycin (tel-ith-roe-MYE-sin) Treats lung or sinus infections in adults. This medicine is a ketolide antibiotic.
When To Not Use TELITHROMYCIN (Oral) (Tablet)
You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to telithromycin or any macrolide antibiotic (such as azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, Biaxin®, Zithromax®). Do not use telithromycin if you are also using cisapride (Propulsid®) or pimozide (Orap®).
How Should You Use TELITHROMYCIN (Oral) (Tablet)
Tablet
- Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to use and how often. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
- You may take this medicine with or without food.
- It is best to take this medicine at the same time every day.
- Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, break, or chew it.
- Keep using this medicine for the full treatment time, even if you feel better after the first few doses. Your infection may not clear up if you stop using the medicine too soon. If a dose is missed:
- If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose. Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.

Store TELITHROMYCIN (Oral) (Tablet) at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture unless otherwise stated by manufacturer's instructions or labelling. Keep TELITHROMYCIN (Oral) (Tablet) and all medications out of the reach of children.
What To Avoid While Using TELITHROMYCIN (Oral) (Tablet)
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using theophylline (Theo-Dur®, Slo-Bid®), digoxin (Lanoxin®), metoprolol (Lopressor®, Toprol®), rifampin (Rifadin®), cyclosporine (Sandimmune®, Neoral®), sirolimus (Rapamune®), or tacrolimus (Prograf®, Protopic®).
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin, Altocor®, Caduet®, Lipitor®, Mevacor®, or Zocor® to lower your cholesterol. Tell your doctor if you are using a seizure medicine or sedative (such as carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, triazolam, Dilantin®, Halcion®, Tegretol®), medicine to treat heart rhythm problems (such as dofetilide, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol, Betapace®, Cardioquin®, Procanbid®, Pronestyl®, Quinaglute®, Quinidex®, Tikosyn®), an ergot medicine to treat headaches (such as ergotamine, Cafergot®, Wigraine®), or medicine to treat a fungus infection (such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, Nizoral®, Sporanox®).
TELITHROMYCIN (Oral) (Tablet) Warnings
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you have heart rhythm problems. Tell your doctor if you have problems with potassium or magnesium in your blood. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, especially if you are on dialysis. Make sure your doctor knows if you have ever had jaundice (skin or eyes turn yellow), hepatitis, or other liver problems caused by telithromycin.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you have a muscle problem called myasthenia gravis, because this medicine might make the symptoms worse. If you have trouble breathing or your myasthenia gravis seems to be getting worse, stop using this medicine and go to the hospital right away.
- You might have trouble seeing after you take a dose of this medicine. This is more common after the first or second dose. You might have blurred vision, double vision, or trouble focusing, especially when you change between looking far away and looking close up. These symptoms might last for several hours after you take your dose. The symptoms may come back when you take the next dose. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you cannot see well. Talk to your doctor if you have so much trouble seeing that you cannot do your normal activities.
- Rarely, antibiotic medicines may cause severe diarrhea. Call your doctor right away if you have severe diarrhea while using this medicine or soon after you stop using it. Do not take anything to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor tells you to.
- If your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse, call your doctor.
TELITHROMYCIN (Oral) (Tablet) Side Effects
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
- Fainting or lightheadedness.
- Skin or eyes turn yellow.
- Skin rash.
- Slow or uneven heartbeat. If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
- Mild dizziness.
- Headache.
- Mild nausea, vomiting.
