Butorphanol (byoo-TOR-fa-nole) Treats different kinds of pain.

When To Not Use Stadol (Injection)

You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to butorphanol or to a preservative called benzethonium chloride.

How Should You Use Stadol (Injection)

Injectable

  • Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. This medicine is given as a shot into a muscle or into a vein.
  • A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine. It may also be given by a home health caregiver.
  • You may be taught how to give your medicine at home. Make sure you understand all instructions before giving yourself an injection. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
  • Use a new needle and syringe each time you inject your medicine.
  • Never share your medicine with anyone.
  • If a dose is missed:
  • If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose.
  • Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Store Stadol (Injection) at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture unless otherwise stated by manufacturer's instructions or labelling. Keep Stadol (Injection) and all medications out of the reach of children.

What To Avoid While Using Stadol (Injection)

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using methohexital (Brietal®), or any medicines that make you sleepy (such as sleeping pills, cold and allergy medicine, narcotic pain killers, or sedatives).
  • Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine.

Stadol (Injection) Warnings

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have lung problems, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, or a history of head injury, seizures, or drug abuse.
  • This medicine may be habit-forming. If you feel that the medicine is not working as well, do not use more than your prescribed dose. Call your doctor for instructions.
  • Do not stop using this medicine suddenly without asking your doctor. You may need to slowly decrease your dose before stopping it completely.
  • This medicine may make you dizzy or drowsy. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert.

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Confusion or hallucinations
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Lightheadedness or fainting
  • Problem with urination
  • Seizures
  • Trouble breathing
  • If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea, vomiting, or constipation
  • Sleepiness or trouble sleeping
