Reyataz (Oral) is used for the Treatment
Atazanavir Treats human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. HIV causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). This medicine does not cure HIV or AIDS, but may slow the progress of the disease.
When To Not Use Reyataz (Oral)
You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to atazanavir. Do not use this medicine together with the following medicines: bepridil (Vascor®), cisapride (Propulsid®), indinavir (Crixivan®), irinotecan (Camptosar®), lovastatin (Mevacor®), pimozide (Orap®), rifampin (Rifadin®, Rifater®), simvastatin (Zocor®), or St. John's Wort. Other medicines that should not be used together with atazanavir include ergot medicines (such as Cafergot®, D.H.E. 45®, Ergomar®, Ergotrate®, Metergine®, Migranol®, Wigraine®), stomach medicine (such as Aciphex®, Nexium®, Prevacid®, Prilosec®, Protonix®), or tranquilizers (Halcion®, midazolam, triazolam, Versed®). Using this medicine while you are also using the medicines listed above can cause very serious medical problems, or even death.
How Should You Use Reyataz (Oral)
Capsule
- Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to use and how often. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
- Atazanavir is used with other medicines to treat HIV infection. Take all other medicines your doctor has prescribed as part of your combination treatment.
- Your dose of atazanavir may depend on the other medicines you are using. Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using efavirenz (Sustiva®), tenofovir (Viread®), ritonavir (Norvir®), or saquinavir (Invirase®, Fortovase®).
- The timing of your dose of atazanavir may be affected if you are also using didanosine (Videx®).
- It is best to take this medicine with food or milk.
- Swallow the capsule whole. Do not open or break it. If a dose is missed:
- If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If your next regular dose is less than 6 hours away, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose.
Proper Reyataz (Oral) Storage
Store Reyataz (Oral) at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture unless otherwise stated by manufacturer's instructions or labelling. Keep Reyataz (Oral) and all medications out of the reach of children.
What To Avoid While Using Reyataz (Oral)
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are also receiving heart or blood pressure medicine (such as diltiazem, felodipine, nicardipine, nifedipine, quinidine, verapamil, Cardizem®, Cordarone®, Norvasc®, Tiazac®), or medicine to lower cholesterol (such as Lipitor®, Pravachol®). Tell your doctor if you use birth control pills, or medicine for depression (such as amitriptyline, imipramine, Norpramin®, Vivactil®). Also make sure your doctor knows if you use medicines that weaken the immune system (such as steroids, chemotherapy, or radiation).
- Other medicines your doctor should know about include Viagra®, Levitra®, Cialis®, antacids, cyclosporine (Neoral®), tacrolimus (Prograf®), blood thinners (Coumadin®), rifabutin (Mycobutin®) and clarithromycin (Biaxin®).
- There are many other drugs that can interact with atazanavir. Make sure your doctor knows about all other medicines you are using.
Reyataz (Oral) Warnings
- Make sure your doctor knows if you have diabetes, liver disease (including hepatitis), or hemophilia (a bleeding disorder). Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you have a heart problem known as "heart block." Tell your doctor if you have ever had an abnormal EKG test of your heartbeats.
- This medicine will not protect you from getting HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases. If you have questions about this, ask your doctor.
- This medicine may raise your blood sugar.
- Your doctor will need to check your blood at regular visits while you are using this medicine. Be sure to keep all appointments.
- You should not breast feed if you have HIV or AIDS, because you may give the infection to your baby through your breast milk.
Reyataz (Oral) Side Effects
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
- Dark-colored urine or pale stools.
- Extreme weakness, tiredness, or confusion.
- Lightheadedness or fainting.
- Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, pain in your upper stomach.
- Rapid breathing, trouble breathing, or nausea and vomiting.
- Yellow skin or eyes. If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
- Depression.
- Gaining weight around your neck, upper back, breast, face, or waist.
- Headache.
- Mild skin rash.
- Nausea, stomach pain.
