Reminyl (Oral) is used for the Treatment

Galantamine (ga-LAN-ta-meen) Treats dementia (memory loss and mental changes) that is a sign of Alzheimer's disease.

When To Not Use Reminyl (Oral)

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to galantamine.

How Should You Use Reminyl (Oral)

Tablet, Liquid

  • Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to use and how often. Your dose may need to be changed several times in order to find out what works best for you. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
  • This medicine comes with patient instructions. Read and follow these instructions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
  • It is best to take this medicine with food or milk, at your morning and evening meals.
  • Drink extra fluids so you will pass more urine while you are using this medicine. This will keep your kidneys working well and help prevent kidney problems.
  • Measure the oral liquid medicine with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup.
  • If a dose is missed:
  • If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
  • If you do not use your medicine for several days, call your doctor. You may need to go back to a lower dose.

Store Reminyl (Oral) at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture unless otherwise stated by manufacturer's instructions or labelling. Keep Reminyl (Oral) and all medications out of the reach of children.

What To Avoid While Using Reminyl (Oral)

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using atropine, quinidine, dicyclomine (Bentyl®), tolterodine (Detrol®), donepezil (Aricept®), tacrine (Cognex®), Tagamet®, ketoconazole (Nizoral®), or bethanechol (Urecholine®).
  • Tell your doctor if you are using medicine for heart rhythm problems (such as verapamil, propranolol, Rythmol®, Tambocor®), medicine for depression (such as amitriptyline, Luvox®, Paxil®, Prozac®), or pain or arthritis medicine (such as aspirin, Advil®, Aleve®, Feldene®, Indocin®, Motrin®, Orudis®, Relafen®, Voltaren®).

Reminyl (Oral) Warnings

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you have a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart rhythm problems, asthma, or other breathing problems.
  • Make sure any doctor or dentist who treats you knows that you are using this medicine. You may need to stop using this medicine several days before having surgery or medical tests.
  • Do not stop using this medicine or change the amount you take without asking your doctor.

Reminyl (Oral) Side Effects

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
  • Chest pain, slow or uneven heartbeat.
  • Light-headedness or fainting.
  • Severe stomach pain, bloody or black, tarry stools, or vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds.
  • If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
  • Decrease in how much or how often you urinate.
  • Loss of appetite, weight loss.
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
