PROPRANOLOL/HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (Oral) (Tablet) is used for the Treatment

Hydrochlorothiazide (hye-droe-klor-oh-THYE-a-zide), Propranolol (proe-PRAN--oh-lole) Treats high blood pressure. This medicine is a combination of a beta blocker and a diuretic (water pill).

When To Not Use PROPRANOLOL/HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (Oral) (Tablet)

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to propranolol, hydrochlorothiazide, sulfa drugs, or other blood pressure medicines (such as atenolol, metoprolol). You should not use this medicine if you have asthma, problems urinating, or if you have certain heart problems. Talk with your doctor about what these heart problems are.

How Should You Use PROPRANOLOL/HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (Oral) (Tablet)

  • Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to take and how often. Your dose may need to be changed several times in order to find out what works best for you. Do not take more medicine or take it more often than your doctor tells you to.
  • Never share your medicine with anyone.
  • If a dose is missed:
  • If you miss a dose or forget to take your medicine, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose.
  • Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

What To Avoid While Using PROPRANOLOL/HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (Oral) (Tablet)

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using amiodarone (Cordarone®), digoxin (Lanoxin®), clonidine (Catapres®, Combipres®), deserpidine (Dureticyl®, Harmonyl®), epinephrine (Epi-Pen®), fentanyl (Actiq®, Duragesic®), haloperidol (Haldol®), ketanserin (Sufrexal®), lithium, thioridazine (Mellaril®), verapamil (Calan®, Covera®), pain or arthritis medicine (such as aspirin, diclofenac, ibuprofen, Advil®, Aleve®, Motrin®, Orudis®), or steroids (such as cortisone, prednisone, Azmacort®, Flonase®).
  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are using any medicines that make you sleepy (such as sleeping pills, cold and allergy medicine, narcotic pain relievers, or sedatives). Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine.

PROPRANOLOL/HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (Oral) (Tablet) Warnings

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have congestive heart failure, lung problems, blood vessel disorders, diabetes, gout, lupus, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, liver disease, kidney disease, problems urinating, overactive thyroid, or circulation problems.
  • Make sure any doctor or dentist who treats you knows that you are using this medicine. You may need to stop using this medicine several days before having surgery or medical tests, include eye exams.

PROPRANOLOL/HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (Oral) (Tablet) Side Effects

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in face or hands, swelling or tingling in the mouth or throat, tightness in chest, trouble breathing
  • Change in how much or how often you urinate
  • Chest pain (may be related to your disease and not a side effect)
  • Confusion, weakness, muscle twitching
  • Dry mouth, increased thirst, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Lightheadedness or fainting
  • Slow heartbeat, fainting, seizures, blue fingernails or palms
  • Yellow eyes or skin
  • If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Loss of appetite
