Phenergan (Rectal) is used for the Treatment
Promethazine (proe-METH-a-zeen) Treats allergies, allergic reactions, and motion sickness. Also used before and after surgery and other procedures to make you sleepy, control pain, or prevent and control nausea and vomiting. This medicine is a phenothiazine antihistamine.
When To Not Use Phenergan (Rectal)
You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to promethazine or other phenothiazine medicines. Some other phenothiazine medicines are Compazine®, Mellaril®, Serentil®, Tacaryl®, Thorazine®, Trilafon®. You should not use this medicine while you are having certain breathing problems, such as asthma symptoms.
How Should You Use Phenergan (Rectal)
Suppository
- Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to use and how often. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
- Never take rectal suppositories by mouth.
- Wash your hands with soap and water before and after using this medicine. Remove the foil or wrapper from the suppository before inserting it.
- To make the suppository easier to insert, you may use a lubricating gel such as K-Y® Jelly, but do not use petroleum jelly (Vaseline®).
- Lie on your left side with your left leg straight or slightly bent, and your right knee bent upward. Gently push the pointed end of the suppository into the rectum about 1 inch.
- Keep lying down for about 15 minutes to keep the suppository from coming out before it melts. Then, wash your hands again. If a dose is missed:
- If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Proper Phenergan (Rectal) Storage
Store Phenergan (Rectal) at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture unless otherwise stated by manufacturer's instructions or labelling. Keep Phenergan (Rectal) and all medications out of the reach of children.
What To Avoid While Using Phenergan (Rectal)
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using an MAO inhibitor (such as Eldepryl®, Marplan®, Nardil®, or Parnate®), any kind of narcotic medicine (such as codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, OxyContin®, Percocet®, Tylenol® 3, Vicodin®), or a barbiturate such as phenobarbital.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are using any medicines that make you sleepy. These include sleeping pills, some pain medicines, cold and allergy medicine, and sedatives. Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are using medicines that weaken your immune system, such as a steroid or cancer treatment.
Phenergan (Rectal) Warnings
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you have heart disease, liver disease, seizures, narrow-angle glaucoma, prostate problems, a stomach ulcer, or trouble urinating. Also tell your doctor if you have breathing problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or sleep apnea. Your doctor needs to know if you have problems with your immune system or a blockage in your digestive system.
- This medicine may make you dizzy or drowsy. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert.
- This medicine should not be used by a child under 2 years old. This medicine should be used carefully in any child.
- Make sure any doctor or dentist who treats you knows that you are using this medicine.
- This medicine may affect the results of certain medical tests.
- This medicine may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Use a sunscreen when you are outdoors. Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds.
Phenergan (Rectal) Side Effects
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Extreme feelings of energy or excitement, either new or more than usual.
- Fever, sweating, confusion, irregular heartbeat, muscle stiffness.
- Problems with balance or walking.
- Seizures.
- Severe confusion, drowsiness, or muscle weakness.
- Skin or eyes turn yellow.
- Trouble breathing.
- Twitching or muscle movements you cannot control.
- Your child begins seeing or hearing things that are not really there, or this happens more often than usual. If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
- Dry mouth.
- Nausea, vomiting.
- Stuffy or runny nose.
