Modafinil (moe-DAF-i-nil) Helps patients who have uncontrollable sleepiness caused by narcolepsy stay awake during the day.

When To Not Use MODAFINIL (Oral) (Tablet)

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to modafinil.

How Should You Use MODAFINIL (Oral) (Tablet)

Tablet

  • Your doctor will tell you how much to use and how often. You may be told to use one dose of the medicine each morning.
  • If a dose is missed:
  • Use the missed dose as soon as possible, unless you don't remember until the afternoon or later in the day. If it is after noon when you remember, skip the missed dose, so you are not kept awake at night.
  • If you do not remember until the next morning, skip the missed dose, and use your medicine at your regular time.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.

What To Avoid While Using MODAFINIL (Oral) (Tablet)

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Some kinds of birth control pills, shots (Depo-Provera®), and implants (Norplant®) may not work as well while you use this medicine and for one month after your last dose. Use another form of birth control while you are being treated with this medicine and for at least 1 month after you stop using the medicine. Talk with your doctor about what type of birth control to use.
  • It is best not to drink alcohol while using this medicine.
  • This medicine can change the way other many medicines work. Make sure your doctor knows if you are using an MAO inhibitor (such as Marplan®, Parnate®, Nardil®, or Eldepryl®), carbamazepine (Tegretol®), phenobarbital, rifampin, theophylline, ketoconazole (Nizoral®), itraconazole (Sporanox®), cyclosporine (Neoral®, Sandimmune®), phenytoin (Dilantin®), warfarin (Coumadin®), diazepam (Valium®), propranolol (Inderal®), antidepressants (such as clomipramine or desipramine), or any other medicine.

  • Talk with your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Check with your doctor before using this medicine if you have a heart beat that is not normal, chest pain, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, or a history of mental illness, heart problems, a heart attack, or drug abuse.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy. Avoid driving or using machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Skin rash, severe itching, hives, or unexplained fever
  • Very fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Chest tightness or trouble breathing
  • If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
  • Feeling nervous or anxious
  • Trouble sleeping at night
  • Nausea, poor appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
