Lansoprazole (lan-SOE-pra-zole) Treats ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), esophagitis, and other conditions caused by too much stomach acid.

You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to lansoprazole.

How Should You Use LANSOPRAZOLE (Oral) (Capsule

Delayed Release Capsule, Powder, Tablet Disintegrating, Delayed Release

  • Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to use and how often. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
  • Take your medicine before eating.
  • Swallow the delayed-release capsule whole. If you cannot swallow the delayed-release capsule, you may open it and pour the medicine into a small amount of soft food such as pudding, yogurt, or applesauce. You may also pour the medicine from the capsule into about 2 ounces (1/4 cup) of apple juice, tomato juice, or orange juice. Stir this mixture well and swallow it right away. Do no chew the medicine. If you mixed the medicine in juice, add some water to the empty drinking glass and then drink the water, to make sure you swallow all the medicine.
  • Do not chew the disintegrating tablet, and do not swallow it whole. Make sure your hands are dry before you handle the tablet. Place the tablet on your tongue. It should melt in less than 1 minute. After the tablet has melted, swallow or drink some water.
  • To use the packet of powder (labeled "for delayed-release oral suspension"): Pour about 2 tablespoons (about 1 ounce or 1/8 cup) of water into a drinking glass. Do not use any other liquid or food. Carefully open the packet and pour the powder into the glass of water. Stir this mixture and drink it right away. Add some more water to the glass and then drink the water, to make sure you swallow all the medicine.
  • Do not stop using this medicine until your doctor tells you to, even if you feel better.
  • If a dose is missed:
  • Take your medicine as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose.
  • Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next usual dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are also taking theophylline, sucralfate (Carafate®), iron, amoxicillin, or ketoconazole.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco because these things can increase your stomach acid.

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Make sure your doctor knows if you have liver disease or any blood disorders.
  • This medicine might contain phenylalanine (aspartame). This is only a concern if you have a disorder called phenylketonuria (a problem with amino acids). Talk to your doctor before using this medicine.

  • Chest pain
  • Trouble breathing or hives
  • Black, tarry stools, bloody vomit or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
