Dextrose (DEX-trose), Heparin (HEP-a-rin) Prevents clots in blood vessels before or after surgery and treats certain blood, heart, and lung disorders.
When To Not Use HEPARIN/DEXTROSE-PREMIX (Injection) (Injectable)
You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to heparin. You should not use heparin if you have bleeding disorders or active bleeding.
How Should You Use HEPARIN/DEXTROSE-PREMIX (Injection) (Injectable)
Injectable
- Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. Use this medicine exactly as your doctor has ordered.
- An SC injection is a shot that is given just under your skin. Heparin SC injections are usually given on the side of your stomach.
- An IV infusion is medicine that is put directly into your body through one of your veins.
- This medicine should be given by a person who is trained to give IV medicine, such as a nurse. Sometimes you, a friend, or family member can be taught to give your medicine.
- You may need to carry identification to let others know you are using heparin in case of an emergency. Ask your doctor about this.
- Your doctor may want to check your blood on a regular schedule while you are using this medicine. Be sure to keep all appointments. If a dose is missed:
- This medicine needs to be given on a regular schedule. If you miss a dose, call your doctor, health caregiver, or clinic where you get your treatments for instructions.

Store HEPARIN/DEXTROSE-PREMIX (Injection) (Injectable) at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture unless otherwise stated by manufacturer's instructions or labelling. Keep HEPARIN/DEXTROSE-PREMIX (Injection) (Injectable) and all medications out of the reach of children.
What To Avoid While Using HEPARIN/DEXTROSE-PREMIX (Injection) (Injectable)
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Avoid taking aspirin or medicines that contain aspirin while you are using heparin.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are also taking Persantine®, blood thinners (Coumadin®), or medicine to treat swelling or pain (Motrin®, Aleve®).

- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you use an IUD for birth control, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
- Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have stomach ulcers, diabetes, kidney or liver disease.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you have recently had any type of surgery, radiation treatments, a fall or other injury, or if you have recently had a baby.
HEPARIN/DEXTROSE-PREMIX (Injection) (Injectable) Side Effects
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Wheezing or trouble breathing
- Skin rash, itching, or hives
- Swelling in the face, lips, or tongue
- Blood in your urine or stools
- Black tarry stools
- Red or "coffee ground" vomit
- Unexplained nosebleeds If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
