DEFEROXAMINE (Injection) (Injectable) is used for the Treatment
Deferoxamine (de-fer-OX-a-meen) Treats iron storage diseases and iron toxicity (too much iron in the blood).
When To Not Use DEFEROXAMINE (Injection) (Injectable)
You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to deferoxamine or if you have severe kidney disease.
How Should You Use DEFEROXAMINE (Injection) (Injectable)
Injectable
- Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given.
- An IM shot is given in your muscle (upper arm, thigh, buttocks).
- An SC shot is given just under your skin (usually in the back of your upper arm or the top of your thigh).
- An IV is medicine that is put directly into your body through one of your veins.
- This medicine should be given by a person trained to give IM or IV medicine, such as a nurse. Sometimes you, a family member, or friend can be taught to give your medicine. If a dose is missed:
- This medicine needs to be given on a regular schedule. If you miss a dose, call your doctor for instructions.

- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
- This medicine may turn your urine red. This is normal.
DEFEROXAMINE (Injection) (Injectable) Side Effects
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Skin rash, itching, or hives
- Slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat
- Ringing in the ears or trouble hearing If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
- Blurred vision, trouble seeing at night, or trouble seeing colors
- Stomach pain, diarrhea
