Cetirizine (se-TI-ra-zeen) Treats hay fever and allergy symptoms, hives, and itching.Belongs to a class of drugs called antihistamines.
When To Not Use CETIRIZINE (Oral) (Tablet)
You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to cetirizine or hydroxyzine (some brand names of hydroxyzine are Atarax® and Vistaril®).
How Should You Use CETIRIZINE (Oral) (Tablet)
Tablet, Liquid
- Your doctor will tell you how much to take and how often. Take this medicine exactly as your doctor ordered.
- You may take this medicine with or without food.
- Carefully measure your oral liquid dose using a measuring spoon or medicine cup. If a dose is missed:
- Take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose.
- Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next regular dose.
- You should not use two doses at the same time.

- Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are also taking other medicines that might make you sleepy such as cold or allergy medicines, muscle relaxants, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, or strong pain killers.
- Tell your doctor if you also take theophylline.

- Check with your doctor before taking cetirizine if you have kidney or liver disease.
- Talk with your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Cetirizine may make you sleepy. Be careful if you are driving or using machinery.

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Yellowing of skin or eyes
- Unusual bruising or bleeding If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
- Drowsiness or dizziness
- Constipation
- Dry mouth
