Bisoprolol - Hair Fall-Out


My hair just started falling-out in hand fulls. I am trying to determine if it's the medication (Bisoprolol) or the dosage of the medication; so I can ask my doctor to reduce the dosage or precribe something else.

Bisoprolol (bis-OH-proe-lol) Treats high blood pressure. This medicine is a beta blocker.

When To Not Use BISOPROLOL (Oral) (Tablet)

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to any type of beta blocker medicine (such as atenolol, metoprolol, propranolol, Corgard®, Inderal®, Lopressor®, Toprol®, Tenormin®), or if you have certain heart problems. Talk with your doctor about what these heart problems are.

How Should You Use BISOPROLOL (Oral) (Tablet)

Tablet

  • Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to take and how often. Do not take more medicine or take it more often than your doctor tells you to.
  • You may take this medicine with or without food.
  • Never share your medicine with anyone.
    • If a dose is missed:
  • If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If your next regular dose is less than 8 hours away, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose.
  • Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Store BISOPROLOL (Oral) (Tablet) at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture unless otherwise stated by manufacturer's instructions or labelling. Keep BISOPROLOL (Oral) (Tablet) and all medications out of the reach of children.

What To Avoid While Using BISOPROLOL (Oral) (Tablet)

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Some drugs should not be taken together because they can interact. A drug interaction may cause mild to very serious medical problems. It can also make one of the drugs not work properly or make it too strong.
  • There are many drugs that can interact with bisoprolol. This especially includes medicines for asthma, chest pain (angina), diabetes, or heart rhythm problems, or epinephrine to treat severe allergic reactions. Tell your doctor if you are using any of these medicines, or if you are using other medicines to treat your high blood pressure.

BISOPROLOL (Oral) (Tablet) Warnings

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, kidney or liver disease, overactive thyroid, diabetes, or severe allergic reactions.
  • Do not stop using this medicine suddenly without asking your doctor, or you may develop life-threatening heart problems. You may need to take smaller and smaller doses before completely stopping the medicine.
  • This medicine may raise or lower your blood sugar, and it may cover up symptoms of very low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
  • This medicine may make you dizzy. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert.
  • Make sure any doctor or dentist who treats you knows that you are using this medicine.
  • If you stop using this medicine, your blood pressure may go up. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms. Even if you feel well, do not stop using the medicine without asking your doctor.

BISOPROLOL (Oral) (Tablet) Side Effects

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Chest pain (may be related to your disease and not a side effect)
  • Fainting or severe dizziness
  • Slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat
  • Swelling of your feet or ankles
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Wheezing or trouble breathing
  • Yellow eyes or skin
    • If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Feeling dizzy, drowsy, or depressed
  • Trouble having sex
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness

I have taken a daily dose of 1 x 5mg bisoprol tablet for several years now. However, from early this year I noticed a soreness in my lower legs, feet and hands especially when relaxing which worsened on laying down to sleep: my feet were also very cold. My sleep was also disturbed and I managed only 2 0r 3 hours sleep and would then come wide awake for 2-3 hours, after which I would sleep soundly for perhaps 4-5 hours more.On getting up and walking about or going out all the soreness would disappear.

The drug was however extremely effective in stabilising my blood pressure and heart rate.

A week ago I decided to abstain from this drug for 7 days and the soreness etc., went away, although I was still left with cold feet. But my blood pressure and pulse soared from about 114/76 pulse 72 at rest, with bisoprolol to about 156/98+ pulse 96 (once reaching 205/103 pulse 101)(gradually rising over the 7 days abstinence.

So it seems like a trade off, especially as when I told the doctor in September about the side effects he said I'd rather protect your heart than your feet, but described me as an enigma.

Last night (about half past midnight) I took another 5mg bisoprolol which worked in just under 2 hours, but I felt very seedy until I fell asleep 5 hours later. I am amazed at the potency of this tiny tablet and intend now to experiment with half a tablet to see what happens. I dread to think of the strength of the 10mg tablet.

I am 64 years old and hope this information is of use to somebody out there.
