Benicar

I was wondering how long it takes for Benicar to begin to work and how long it takes for it to reach its peak effectiveness.   Thank you! Toby Sutton

For 30 years I had been taking 100 mg of Metoprolol, two times a day. When this stopped working for my high blood pressure the physician prescribed other drugs for me to take with the Metoprolol. All of them gave me bad side effects. My doctor put me on Benicar which is a new and expensive ARB class drug. Benicar is popular for regulating blood pressure and to minimize risks for strokes. Although I am not diabetic, Benicar is supposed to be good for people with diabetes. My experience with Benicar has not been positive. The first issue I experienced was sleeping more and taking a lot of naps. Next, I started to lose my appetite. I could not get food down and lost 10lbs in a month as a result. My vision started to change and I could not focus. The worst side effect I experienced was the heart palpitations and the mental changes. I had trouble focusing, started to have short term memory loss and lost the desire to do anything. I was no longer interested in anything around me. This is the worst medication I have ever taken for my blood pressure. I was on this for a month, and the 20 mg pill only brought my blood pressure down from 150 over 100. I begged my physician to take me off this medication and he did. I am now on Clonidine which so far it seems to be working. I am hopeful this medication will work and I will have fewer side effects. I am sad that Benicar is on the market for physicians to prescribe. If you take Benicar be aware of side effects that may occur quickly.

At first, my blood pressure would be sky high. I would fax my doctor my numbers every three hours. She told me just to continue taking it, which I did. My blood pressure has gone down a lot, from 159/97 to 120/80 or lower.
