Mostly my iOS gaming of late. Not had much time to do anitnyhg else or much motivation to try anitnyhg else. Amalur is dull as rocks, imo, so there's no interest to play the game further than the first few hours. Tried the ME3 demo and I was cringing and shaking my head the entire time. Not only due to the issues of the Krogan lady mission, and how everyone kept using the term female' this and female' that (even the lady herself references to herself as nothing beyond female') rather than using this woman's name, but also because of the really weird graphics and camera positioning and character cutscenes. First, it's a demo. I do not know which build it is based on. By the time the official game comes out, things may look better and more natural and less hyperrealistic-plastic-waxy. It's not from the high-def textures or the unique scanned faces causing things to float through the Uncanny Valley. It is the opposite. Things look too unrefined, lacking details and higher resolutions. Like what is up with Anderson's face? It looks like his skin is blotchy or popcorny? The darker skintones also are very light. My main FemShep is an awesome black woman with dark skin, but in this game she looks very light milk chocolate to nearly white, depending on the lighting effects. The fire light and console reflection lighting make the darkest skintone look so washed out, it's jarring. Likewise, the deep shadows are so dark that it pretty much blankets the entire face to where you're just ears and eyes and shapes in the shadows. Sometimes I wonder if game designers think about utilizing lighting effects effectively for games, knowing that people may play in hues other than white. Not all lighting and glow effects are flattering on golden, olive, brown, or black skin. I like the white teeth. But something about the teeth+mouth movements catches my eye. The third person camera is situated very differently. I do not like it. It is too close and centered. I prefer ME1 distance. The emotionally manipulative scene with the kid in the air ducts just eh. It feels really silly and forced to me. Very overwrought sad dramatics. What if my Shepard hated children? What if my Shepard is battlehardened and accepts that with war comes casualties? Why is s/he looking all cryface sad? Why does s/he care? I'm not trying to say that Shepard should be emotionless or stoic all the time, but that I hate when direct control of our character is taken away from us for the sake of cutscenes and overwrought dramatics. I rather have had the option to decide how my Shepard would react to the plot. Maybe it is different in-game (supposedly there are more options/dialogue branches in the official product than what the demo showcases). Garrus. Person opinion: I don't like his chrome design or weird Cylon/Centurion helmet. It's odd. I like that Garrus' journey over the years has had him become more of a veteran, but it also feels like every sequel tries to out macho the last, and inject more masculinity into the character. Human values of masculinity at that. (I prefer the armor in ME1.)Liara. The facemask returns. Instead of wearing a real helmet. Why? It isn't making sense to me to have fleshy humanoids with half of their face exposed when in extreme climes or space or in hostile environments (planet-wise). Bothered me in ME2 so much, bothers me here. (Again, I prefer the armor in ME1.)Liara's voice sounds different. Perhaps it is to reflect her growth. It could be neat. Less social awkwardness and wide-eyed, more confident and edgy. Wrex too sounds different. Less aggressive grunting minimalist responses, less arrogance, more octave range in his emoting over coms to Shepard and more joke-y with his former companions. As it is, the demo really did not encourage me to purchase the game. Actually, it made me cringe a lot more than I was hoping. I really had trouble pushing myself to finish the whole single player portion of the demo. The pacing and dialogue was just so not there for me. Anywho, I picked up the demo on the PC and Xbox. I have friends divided over platforms and I'll be fiddling with multiplayer come Friday. If folks want to hit me up to play, I'm fine with that. Not hard to find me, same name.
