THYROID SUPPLEMENT (By mouth)

Armour Thyroid (Oral) Brandname

Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid, Armour Thyroid, Unithroid, Cytomel, Thyrolar, Westhroid, Nature-Throid NT-1, Nature-Throid NT-2, Nature-Throid NT-1/2, Nature-Throid NT-3

Armour Thyroid (Oral) is used for the Treatment

Treats hypothyroidism (the body does not produce enough thyroid hormone).

When To Not Use Armour Thyroid (Oral)

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to any type of thyroid hormone or if you have an overactive thyroid gland.

How Should You Use Armour Thyroid (Oral)

Capsule, Tablet

  • Your doctor will tell you how much to take and how often
  • Take your medicine at the same time every day.
  • Take the medicine on an empty stomach.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without first checking with your doctor, you may need to take smaller and smaller doses before completely stopping the medicine.
    • If a dose is missed:
  • Take the missed dose take as soon as possible.
  • Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next regular dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.

Proper Armour Thyroid (Oral) Storage

Store Armour Thyroid (Oral) at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture unless otherwise stated by manufacturer's instructions or labelling. Keep Armour Thyroid (Oral) and all medications out of the reach of children.

What To Avoid While Using Armour Thyroid (Oral)

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are taking a blood thinner (Coumadin®), cholestyramine (Questran®), medicine for diabetes (insulin, Diabenese®, Glucotrol®), estrogens, birth control pills, or products used for colds, asthma, appetite control, hay fever, or sinus problems.

Armour Thyroid (Oral) Warnings

  • Check with your doctor before taking this medicine if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or an underactive adrenal or pituitary gland.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Large doses of thyroid hormones, especially when taken with diet pills, can result in dangerous side effects.
  • Make sure you see your doctor for regular check-ups so your condition can be followed closely.

Armour Thyroid (Oral) Side Effects

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Skin rash or hives
  • Shortness of breath or trouble breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Fast or pounding heartbeat
  • Inability to stand heat
  • Extreme nervousness or irritability, tremors
  • Severe diarrhea, intense sweating

At first, I was taking Synthirod. This medication was causing a lot of problems. Weight gain bothered me the most, but mood swings and night sweats were also problems. I was very happy to find Amour Thyroid. The instant I began taking it, things got better. My weight went back to a healthy level, sleep was improved, and my mood was much better. Highly recommended.

For nearly 6 weeks I have been ingesting 25 mcg. of Synthroid as prescribed by my doctor. The doctor told me exactly how I should use the medication. I need to drink a full glass of water with the pill, and must take it at least 30 minutes before eating food. I also cannot eat calcium or iron supplements four hours after I take the pill. My TSH is around 6. After the first week of taking the drug, I felt much better, as I didn't feel tired or poor in any way. The longer I took the pill, the better I feel. Eventually the dosage will be around 100 mcg, or at least so says my doctor. He will monitor my condition every three months or so. The only negative to taking this is that I have to get up earlier in the day, but at least I can use this time to workout. Since my TSH was around 4 to 5 for many years, my doctor wanted to have me start on Synthroid right away, hoping to get my TSH to around 1. I was a bit scared taking medicine for this long (6 months), but since I've spent the last 10 years or so feeling awful, I knew that I had to do something to improve my life. Sitting in bed for 16 hours plus a day wasn't a way to live. Luckily this drug has helped me recovered what I thought I had lost.

In June of 2009 I was 29 years old. I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid. I have been placed on and taken off of several medications that had no affect. I am currently taking 50 mcg. of the medication called Synthroid. I am unable to take the generic form of this medication.
I have recently noticed that I am having heart palpitations and severe headaches. The palpitations are happening on a daily basis and I have wondered if this is caused by a heart condition or disease of some sort.
After reading reviews from others that take this medication, I now believe that it is causing the negative symptoms I am having. I will be seeking another medication, whether it be an all natural drug or a different brand or type.
I was wondering if anyone else has noticed similar negative side effects such as those I am having.
