Amantadine (a-MAN-ta-deen) Treats or prevents the flu (influenza type-A). Also treats Parkinson's disease and Parkinson-like symptoms caused by certain medicines.

You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to amantadine.

  • Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to use and how often. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
  • To treat or prevent infection with the flu, keep using this medicine for the full treatment time.

  • If a dose is missed:
  • If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose.

  • Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine.

AMANTADINE (Oral) (Capsule Warnings

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have glaucoma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, low blood pressure, swelling or water retention, epilepsy, or a history of seizures.
  • Do not stop using this medicine suddenly without asking your doctor. You may need to slowly decrease your dose before stopping it completely.
  • This medicine may make you dizzy. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert.

  • Fever, fast heartbeat, mood changes, uncontrolled muscle movements, rapid breathing
  • Lightheadedness or fainting

  • Unusual thoughts or behavior, thoughts of hurting yourself
  • If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
  • Anxious, confused, or irritable feeling
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Unusual dreams
