Classification: Antibiotic, penicillin See Also: See also Anti-Infectives and Penicillins . Action/Kinetics: A parenteral, semisynthetic antibiotic with an antibacterial spectrum of activity resembling that of carbenicillin. Peak plasma levels: IM, 25-35 mcg/mL after 1 hr; IV, 15 min. t 1/2: 70 min. Elimination complete after 6 hr. Uses: Primarily suitable for treatment of gram-negative organisms but also effective for mixed infections. (1) Bacterial septicemia, skin and soft tissue infections, acute and chronic respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, Escherichia coli and other gram-negative organisms. Combined therapy with gentamicin or tobramycin is sometimes indicated for treatment of Pseudomonas infections. (2) GU tract infections (complicated and uncomplicated) caused by the above organisms and by Enterobacter and Streptococcus faecalis. (3) Anaerobic bacteria causing empyema, anaerobic pneumonitis, lung abscess, bacterial septicemia, peritonitis, intra-abdominal abscess, skin and soft tissue infections, salpingitis, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, pelvic abscess. Ticarcillin may be used in infections in which protective mechanisms are impaired such as during use of oncolytic or immunosuppressive drugs or in clients with acute leukemia. Additional Contraindications: Pregnancy. Special Concerns: Use with caution in presence of impaired renal function and for clients on restricted salt diets. Additional Side Effects: Neurotoxicity and neuromuscular excitability, especially in clients with impaired renal function.
