Uses:
Narcotic analgesic used as an adjunct to maintain balanced general anesthesia. To induce and maintain general anesthesia (with 100% oxygen), especially in neurosurgery or CV surgery.
Additional Contraindications
Use during labor.
Special Concerns:
Decrease dose in the obese, elderly, or debilitated client.
Additional Side Effects
Erythema, chills, intraoperative muscle movement.
Extended postoperative respiratory depression.

Adults, individualized, usual initial: 1-2 mcg/kg with oxygen and nitrous oxide;
maintenance: 10-25 mcg as required.
For complicated surgery.
Adults: 2-8 mcg/kg with oxygen and nitrous oxide;
maintenance: 10-50 mcg.
To induce and maintain general anesthesia.
Adults: 8-30 mcg/kg with 100% oxygen and a muscle relaxant;
maintenance: 25-50 mcg.
Pediatric, less than 12 years: 10-25 mcg/kg with 100% oxygen;
