Classification: Corticosteroid, ophthalmic See Also: See also Corticosteroids. Action/Kinetics: Very low plasma levels seen after ophthalmic use. Uses: Treatment of postoperative inflammation following ocular surgery. Treatment of anterior uveitis. Contraindications: Use in epithelial herpes simplex keratitis; vaccinia, varicella, and most other viral infections of the cornea or conjunctiva; mycobacterial infections of the eye; fungal infections of the eye; any acute, untreated eye infection. Special Concerns: Acute purulent ocular infections may be masked if used in bacterial, fungal, or viral eye infections. Safety and efficacy have not been determined in children. Side Effects: Ophthalmic: Elevated IOP, blurred vision, discharge, discomfort, ocular pain, foreign body sensation, hyperemia, pruritus, sticky sensation, increased fibrin, dry eye, conjunctival edema, corneal staining, keratitis, tearing, photophobia, edema, irritation, corneal ulcer, browache, lid margin crusting, corneal edema, infiltrate, corneal erosion. Respiratory; Pharyngitis, rhinitis. Miscellaneous: Headache, taste perversion. Prolonged use: Ocular hypertension, glaucoma, optic nerve damage, defects in visual acuity and visual fields, posterior subcapsular formation, secondary ocular infections, perforation of the globe where there is thinning of the cornea or sclera.
