Classification: Anti-inflammatory drug Action/Kinetics: A salicylate that is converted by bacteria in the colon to 5-PAS (5-para-aminosalicylate), which exerts an anti-inflammatory effect for the treatment of ulcerative colitis. 5-PAS is slowly absorbed resulting in a high concentration of drug in the colon. The anti-inflammatory activity is likely due to inhibition of synthesis of prostaglandins in the colon. After PO use the drug is only slightly absorbed (2.4%) into systemic circulation where it has a short half-life ( < 1 hr) and is more than 99% bound to plasma proteins. Uses: To maintain remission of ulcerative colitis in clients who cannot take sulfasalazine. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to salicylates. Special Concerns: Use with caution during lactation.
