Classification: Hair growth stimulant Action/Kinetics: The topical solution stimulates vertex hair growth in clients with male pattern baldness or in women with androgenetic alopecia. Mechanism may be related to dilation of arterioles and stimulation of resting hair follicles into active growth. Following topical administration, approximately 1.4% is absorbed into the systemic circulation. Onset: 4 months but is variable. Duration: New hair growth may be lost 3-4 months after withdrawal of therapy. Minoxidil and its inactive metabolites are excreted in the urine. Also, see Minoxidil, oral. Uses: To treat male and female pattern baldness (alopecia androgenetica). Extra Strength (5%) is only for treatment of hereditary male pattern baldness. Investigational: Alopecia areata. Contraindications: Lactation. Use of 5% solution in women. Special Concerns: Use with caution in clients with hypertension, coronary heart disease, or predisposition to heart failure. Safety and efficacy in clients under 18 years of age have not been determined. Increased systemic absorption may occur if the scalp is irritated or there are abrasions. Side Effects: Dermatologic: Allergic contact dermatitis, irritant dermatitis, pruritus, dry skin, flaking of scalp, alopecia, hypertrichosis, erythema, worsening of hair loss. Allergic: Hives, facial swelling, allergic rhinitis. CNS: Dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, faintness, anxiety, depression, fatigue. Respiratory: Sinusitis, bronchitis, respiratory infection. Miscellaneous: Conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, vertigo. NOTE: The incidence of side effects due to placebos is often similar to the incidence of side effects due to the drug itself.
