Action/Kinetics: Active against many gram-positive and gram-negative organisms and in the presence of serum and pus. When applied topically, it diffuses through devascularized areas, is absorbed, and is rapidly metabolized.

Uses: Topical application to prevent infections in second- and third-degree burns. To control bacterial infections when used under moist dressing over meshed autografts on excised burn wounds.

Contraindications: Use for established infections or in infants less than 1 month of age.

Special Concerns: Use with caution during lactation and in those with acute renal failure.

Side Effects: Allergic: Rash, itching, swelling, hives, blisters, facial edema, erythema, eosinophilia. Dermatologic: Pain or burning (common) on application; excoriation of new skin, bleeding (rare). Respiratory: Hyperventilation or tachypnea, decrease in arterial pCO 2. Metabolic: Acidosis, increase in serum chloride. Miscellaneous: Fatal hemolytic anemia with DIC diarrhea.

How Supplied: Cream: 85 mg/g; Powder for Topical Solution: 5%; Topical Powder: 50 g/packet

Dosage
?Cream
1/16-in.-thick film applied over entire surface of burn with gloves once or twice daily until healing is progressing satisfactorily or until site is ready for grafting.
