Classification: Fluoroquinolone antibiotic See Also: See also Fluoroquinolones. Uses: (1) Acute maxillary sinusitis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae or Moraxella catarrhalis. (2) Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis due to Staphylococcus aureus, S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, or M. catarrhalis. (3) Community acquired pneumonia due to S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, H. parainfluenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, M. catarrhalis, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila or Mycoplasma pneumoniae. (4) Uncomplicated mild to moderate infections of the skin and skin structures, including abscesses, cellulitis, furuncies, impetigo, pyoderma, and wound infections due to S. aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes. (5) Mild to moderate complicated UTIs due to Enterococcus faecalis, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. (6) Uncomplicated UTIs (mild to moderate acute cystitis) in women due to E. coli, K. pneumoniae or Staphylococcus saprophyticus. (7) Acute mild to moderate pyelonephritis due to E. coli. Contraindications: Lactation. Special Concerns: The dose must be reduced with impaired renal function. (See Administration/Storage.) Safety and efficacy have not been determined in those less than 18 years of age.
