Classification: Drug for hypertensive emergency Action/Kinetics: Rapid-acting vasodilator that is an agonist for D 1-like dopamine receptors and þ 2-adrenoreceptors. Causes vasodilation in coronary, renal, mesenteric, and peripheral arteries; vascular beds do not respond uniformly. t 1/2, elimination: About 5 min in mild to moderate hypertensives. Steady-state levels: About 20 min. Metabolized in liver and most is excreted in urine. Uses: Hypertensive emergencies. Contraindications: Use with beta-blockers or in those with sulfite sensitivity. Special Concerns: Use with caution during lacatation and in those with glaucoma or intraocular hypertension. Safety and efficacy have not been determined in children. Side Effects: CV: Tachycardia, hypotension, flushing, ST-T abnormalities, postural hypotension, extrasystoles, palpitations, bradycardia, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, MI angina pectoris. Body as a whole: Headache, sweating, back pain, non-specific chest pain, pyrexia, limb cramp. CNS: Nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, dizziness. GI: N&V;, abdominal pain or fullness, constipation, diarrhea. Respiratory: Nasal congestion, dyspnea, upper respiratory disorder. Hematologic: Leukocytosis, bleeding. Miscellaneous: Reaction at injection site, urinary tract infection, oliguria. Laboratory Test Alterations: Creatinine, BUN, serum glucose, transaminase, LDH. Hypokalemia. How Supplied: Injection concentrate: 10 mg/mL
