Classification: Anticholinergic

Content: Each tablet, capsule, or 5 mL elixir contains: Anticholinergic: Atropine sulfate, 0.0194 mg. Anticholinergic: Hyoscyamine sulfate, 0.1037 mg. Anticholinergic: Scopolamine hydrobromide, 0.0065 mg. Sedative: Phenobarbital, 16.2 mg. NOTE: The Extentabs contain three times the amount of drugs found in tablets.

Uses: Possibly effective as an adjunct in the treatment of irritable colon, spastic colon, mucous colitis, and acute enterocolitis. Has also been used in the treatment of duodenal ulcer.

Special Concerns: It is not known with certainty whether or not anticholinergic drugs aid in the healing in duodenal ulcer or decrease the rate of recurrence or prevent complications.

Dosage

Adults, usual: 1-2 tablets or capsules t.i.d.-q.i.d. (or one Extentab q 12 hr). If the elixir is used, adult, usual: 5-10 mL t.i.d.-q.i.d. Pediatric: Use elixir as follows: 4.5-9.0 kg: 0.5 mL q 4 hr or 0.75 mL q 6 hr; 9.1-13.5 kg: 1.0 mL q 4 hr or 1.5 mL q 6 hr; 13.6-22.6 kg: 1.5 mL q 4 hr or 2.0 mL q 6 hr; 22.7-33.9 kg: 2.5 mL q 4 hr or 3.75 mL q 6 hr. 34.0-45.3 kg: 3.75 mL q 4 hr or 5 mL q 6 hr; 45.4 kg: 5 mL q 4 hr or 7.5 mL q 6 hr.
