Action/Kinetics:
Peak serum levels: 73-153 mcg/mL.

1/2: 102-156 min. Approximately 30% excreted unchanged in the urine.
Uses:
(1) Respiratory tract infections due to S
treptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus (penicillinase/non-penicillinase producing),
S. pyogenes (group A ß-hemolytic streptococci),
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis and
Enterococcus species. (2) Peritonitis and other intra-abdominal infections due to
E. coli, P. aeruginosa, enterococci, anaerobic gram&endsh;negative bacilli (including
Bacteroides fragilis). (3) Bacterial septicemia due to
S. pneumoniae, S. agalactiae, S. aureus enterococci,
P. aeruginosa, E. coli, Klebsiella species,
Proteus species,
Clostridium species, and anaerobic gram-positive cocci. (4) Skin and skin structure infections due to
S. aureus, S. pyogenes, P. aeruginosa, and enterococci. (5) Pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis, and other female genital tract infections due to
N. gonorrhoeae, S. epidermidis, S. agalactiae, E. coli, Clostridium species, enterococci,
Bacteroides species, anaerobic gram-positive cocci. (6) Urinary tract infections due to enterococci,
E. coli, and
P. aeruginosa.
Special Concerns:
Use with caution in hepatic disease or biliary obstruction. Safety and effectiveness have not been determined in children.
Additional Side Effects:
Hypoprothrombinemia resulting in bleeding and/or bruising.
Additional Drug Interactions:
Concomitant use with ethanol may cause an Antabuse-like reaction.
How Supplied:
Powder for injection: 1 g, 2 g, 10 g
Dosage
?IM, IV
Adults, usual: 2-4 g/day in equally divided doses q 12 hr (up to 12-16 g/day has been used in severe infections or for less sensitive organisms).
NOTE: This drug is significantly excreted in the bile; thus, the daily dose should not exceed 4 g in hepatic disease or biliary obstruction. |
