Action/Kinetics:
Acid stable drug.
Peak serum levels: PO: 6.5 mcg/mL after 1 hr.

1/2: 60 min. Rapidly excreted unchanged in urine.
Uses:
(1) Upper and lower UTIs or bacteriuria due to
Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris and P. mirabilis, Morganella morganii, Providencia rettgeri, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas and enterococci. (2) Prostatitis due to
E. coli, Streptococcus faecalis (enterococci),
P. mirabilis and
Enterobacter species.
Additional Contraindications:
Pregnancy.
Special Concerns:
Safe use in children not established. Use with caution in clients with impaired renal function.
Additional Side Effects:
Neurotoxicity in clients with impaired renal function.
Drug Interactions:
Blood levels of carbenicillin may be
with administration of probenecid.
Additional Drug Interactions:
When used in combination with gentamicin or tobramycin for
Pseudomonas infections, effect of carbenicillin may be enhanced.
