joint pain after pregnancy Quote | Reply

hi, I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem after a
pregnancy. The pain is usually in my elbows, back and knees, but
travels around to hands, fingers and feet as well. My dr. thinks it
may be hormonal and wants to give it a little more time before seeing
an internist, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had this same
experience. thanks! mrsg

that's a common problem. hormonal pains in joints are hard to diagnose
sometimes. has your doctor recommended a specialist or anyone who
might know this health problem a little better? is it an internist
that i'm thinking of? i don't know if that's correct or not. please
let me know what you find out. my sister had her little girl about a
year ago and had the same problems with joint pain in her back,
fingers, and arms in general. her pains subsided though after about
8 months when the pediatrician told her that her hormones were getting
gack to normal... this might be what you will experience. take
care, tara

Hi, My daughter is now 7 1/2 months old. I had similar problems
with joint pain beginning approx. 3 weeks post partum. I was told it
may be RA (which it was not - to put your mind at ease request a blood
test to rule out RA). Please don't be concerned that it may be RA.
Doctors with limited knowledge of this condition may suggest it, but
it generally isn't. My joint pain dissipated 5-6 months post partum.
I had severe joint pain especially in my hands (mainly) the small
finger joints and also suffered with carpel tunnel syndrome. These are
common post pregnancy conditions. I also had physical therapy which
helped to alleviate the symptoms sooner. Good luck and with patience
your symtoms will soon disappear./kb :-)

I had twin boys on November 28, 2004. About 1 month later I started
having what I thought was tendonitis in my hands, it has spread to my
feet, back arms and wrist. My doctor has given me celebrex and it
barely touches the pain. I am not in pain when I am sitting just when
I am moving. It is especially bad in the morning. I have an
appointment with a rheumatologist, but my RH factor was negative. I
find it hard to function some days. I was just wondering if you found
anything to alleviate the pain. Do my symptoms sound like yours. If so
you have given me so much hope. I was afraid I might have Rheumatoid
arthritis. thnks kmf

I too have had joint pain after delivering twins three years ago. It
first started out in the thumb, then plantar fasciaitis sp?,
tendonitis in my right elbow, now in the left too, last week my big
toe joint got really painful. I've always wondered if it had anything
to do with the magnesium sulfate I was put on when I delivered to
treat the preeclampsia, or drinking coffee, I've tried massage,
accupuncture, glucosamine, MSM, chondrotin, patches, ice, rest but I'm
still having problems. I'm now going to see some more doctors. Any
suggestions or comments from others.

hi there...i too have had moderate to severe joint pain which started
about 2 months postpartum. I have most of the pain and stiffness in my
knees, ankles and foot bones, but also have stiffness in my finger
joints, wrists and elbows. Even getting up off the floor with my son
is difficult. The pain and stiffness are worse in the morning or when
I have been immobile for 10 minutes plus - it is then that the
stiffness is the worst. please let me know if you have found any pain
relievers that work as I have not.

I couldn't stand it anymore and I went to a rheumatologist. I told him
about what I have read on this website and he said better to be safe
than sorry. The swelling of your joints can really cause damage
quickly, so he put me on prednizone sp?. The first day I took it I
noticed a huge difference. He only put me on a small dosage, but it
has really helped. He also took x-rays and blood test. My Rheumatoid
factor is still negative, but my sed-rate is still really high. Which
just means I have swelling. I hope it will go away when my hormones
adjust, but to be safe he also started me on a regiment of rheumatoid
arthritis drugs to hopefully stop or at least slow any damage to my
joints. I was to the point where I could barely pick my babies up
and my feet were so bad I had to wear slippers all of the time. I also
started seeing a physical therapist which helped because he let me
know what was a good pain and what was bad:) I really hope that we
all have fluke joint pain that will go away, but if not all the
reseach shows the sooner you treat RA the better. I am sorry I wish I
could say mine just went away, but going to the doctor was the best
thing for me. I was really starting to suffer mentally because I felt
incapable of taking care of my babies. I couldn't get on the floor and
play with them I couldn't even take them for walks. I guess what I am
trying to say is go to the doctor don't suffer anymore:) I am much
happier and have the energy to be a mom of twins:) Good Luck and keep
me updated and I will keep you updated:)

my son is 4 months old and for about 2 weeks now, my knees have
swollen to almost softball size and are hard to bend and are
incredibly painful. I feel scared that I feel like this so young (30)
and am very worried about my mobility as a mom in the future. Ice
packs are all I have tried. I don't want to take any medication as I
am breast feeding. Any suggestions? HELP!

Check out this website on Natural Progesterone, it has alot of useful
info about joint pain and other symptoms women have when their
hormones are out of balance.
http://www.natural-progesterone-advisory-network.com/index.php I
signed up as an independent consultant with a health and wellness
company and started using their natural progesterone and it has been
wonderful!! And the great thing is that there are no side effects to a
natural progesterone, it is even safe to use during pregnancy and
while nursing. If you have any questions please pm me and I will
get you additional info.

I am so glad I found all of you. My baby is 10 months old now and I
have been having this pain for about 4 months. I had a severe staff
infection and Klebsiella infection after delivery so I was a little
afraid this paid had something to do with that. At least I found
people with the same problems. The joints in my toes, ankles, hips is
horrible. Expecially in the morning and after I sit for a few minutes.
I was so paranoid about not being able to take care of my daughter.
Seeing all of your stories has given me the incentive to finally see a
doctor. Would most of you suggest an internest? Thanks to all of you.

My daughter is just over 13 months old now. My joint pain started in
my right knee a couple of weeks after she was born. I began
experiencing pain in my left knee a few months later. Thinking that I
had torn ligaments in my knees, I saw an orthopedic surgeon. Following
an MRI on my right knee, he said nothing was torn, but said there was
"swelling of unknown origin" and recommended rest (was he serious? I
have a baby!). Since this insightful news in August 2004, I've
continued to have pain in both knees and I've added to it with pain in
my left foot, right elbow, and hands. I'm seeing another physician
this week to try and rule out all of the scary stuff that we're all
afraid of; I'll post more to this forum if I figure out anything that
will help. Hang in there--it's somewhat comforting to know that others
are experiencing this too, though I certainly wish none of us were!

Hi, Iam also glad I found all of you. I was beginning to think
that I am alone with all these kinds of joint symptoms. My baby is now
7 months and my problems started several weeks before the delivery. I
experienced severe joint pain in my elbows, hands (fingers and wrist)
and my knees were also aching. Especially in my elbows and in my hands
I felt stiffness. The explination I got from my gynecologist was that
nerves had swollowed in my arms and were aching because of all the
water in my body that the pregnancy had caused. Also the joints were
aching out of this reason he told me. An ortopedic surgeon told men
that I have overflexible joints and that they are more sensitive to
hormones out of this reason. He said that if I train my muscles my
joints also will feel better. Now 7 months later my joints are
better but I still have pains in my back, neck and in my arms. My
hands (the wrist) are still very stiff and sore. I have also been
afraid that I might have reumatoid artritis but my RH factor is
negative. I suffer mentally from this condition. I wish too that we
all didnt have to suffer like this!

Re: [mrsg] joint pain after pregnancy [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Hey mrsg, how are you doing?

Low back pain is common in pregnancy, and this does not mean that the patient is developing arthritis. It is
managed by postural exercises and relation techniques taught at antenatal classes and may require simple analgesia, such as paracetamol.

In general several physical changes occur in pregnancy. These are clearly hormonally influenced, but have a huge impact on the immune state and the musculoskeletal system.

Especially in the last third or trimester of the pregnancy. This is the body’s mechanism to relax the ligaments of the pelvis, to help allow the baby to fit through the birth canal and the pelvis at childbirth.

The lax ligaments of the spine result in an increased curvature of the spine. This is called a lordosis, and allows the female to adjust her center of gravity to accommodate the fetus in the abdomen and maintain her posture.

The result is low back pain.
The nature of this pain is benign and is termed “soft tissue rheumatism”, because it originates from the soft tissue – i.e. ligaments, tendons and muscles it resolves after the end of the pregnancy within weeks in the majority.

These problems are usually recognized as self-limited and not a type to pose a major health hazard to the health of the patient. Extensive tesying is in appropriate because abnormalities may be revealed that are irrelevant, and these results may prompt further, often unnecessary, investigations.

NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen, diclofenac) should initially be given at their maximum recommended dosage until symptoms improve. Then, they should be tapered gradually over several days.

Best wishes,

The Prison Hospital

Prisoner: Look here, doctor! You've already removed my spleen, tonsils, adenoids, and one of my kidneys. I only came to see if you could get me out of this place!

Doctor: I am, bit by bit.

I've been trying to exercise in order to lose weight, but it's almost impossible when you're in pain. Let me know if you found a solution. Thanks.

Glad to hear everyone on here is having similar problems. My son is now 4 months old. My pain started shortly before I had him and has continued since. I have been trying to find someone who has had some of the same pain I have been having. I had terrible hip pain after I had my baby and then that seemed to have subsided. I still have trouble standing after sitting for even 10 minutes. But it is not as bad as it was. But the pain in my feet, especially my heels is sometimes excruciating I can hardly walk. I too would like to start exercising but I can't with so much pain. Will be glad to go back for my next checkup to ask about it. Good luck to all.[:)]

I have had all of the same symptoms as well since my son was about 4 months old. He is now 9 months old and I still have the same thing...especially in my feet and elbows. In the morning it is very hard to walk and after I have been sitting for a while. I went to an internist and thankfully she was very intrigued by what could be causing this. She ran tests for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis both of which came back negative. Then she ran a thyroid test and I have hypothyroidism. The symptoms of hypothyroidism run so similar to all the things you feel after having a baby...fatigue, muscle and joint pain, hair loss, irritability, irregular periods, weight gain/difficulty losing weight...there are a whole list of symptoms. Some of which you can have and some not. So I just thought I would put this out there in case any of you are experiencing other symptoms along with this joint pain. Good luck!

Hello.
My joint pain started 8 months postpartum. My doctor had me take blood/urine tests. My RA Factor was slightly out of range (only by 2 points) and she couldn't figure out what was wrong so she referred me to a Rheumotologist. I saw the Rheumi and she told me it was probably a combination of things..lack of sleep, stress, result of pregnancy, etc. My symptoms didn't go away and I was driving myself insane to the point where I thought something was seriously wrong so I asked my doctor for an MRI! That came out fine so I'm now I am back to square one. In any case, my joint pain got better for about a week and a half and then it came back again a few days ago. I'm taking fish oil pills and a multi-vitamin and am trying not to worry so much anymore. There is another long thread on babycenter.com with moms with similiar problems for those of you interested. Here's to better help so we can keep up with our little ones! :)

Hi all,

Thanks first of all for making me feel normal again as I too felt I was going around the bend and my husband was sure that I was a hyperchondriac, complaining about mystery joint pains for the last 10months. But I bring good news! After reading your e-mails I visited my Asian herbalist who after taking my pulse (to find out how my internal organs are functioning) he told me that my kidneys were a little congested and prescribed the appropriate herbs for me. I asked him if this had anything to do with my joint pains and he explained that the kidneys function was to filter the blood and get rid of toxins in the body - and guess what - if the kidney is not functioning to its desired potential then toxins build up in the joints - causing JOINT PAIN!! Now this does not mean that we all need kidney transplants and we must keep in mind that there are various things that have happened to our bodies that have put stress on our kidneys. But what I will say is that after taking just one dose of the herbs I already had a 50% improvement in my joints. After a week I can say it is all but gone - 95% better. So if you are in a lot of pain it's worth seeing your asian herbalist (if you know one) and see whether they can help. But be prepared, the herbs taste TERRIBLE! If you need further information or have some questions, please feel free to e-mail me. I would love to see you all pain free Smile

My daughter is 5 months old, and about 3 weeks after I had her, I noticed that my feet were sore when I walked. It seems to have gotten a little worse. When I stand from a sitting position, and when I wake up in the morning, it feels like the bones in my feet and legs hurt. I have to hold on to the bed when I get up in the morning and begin walking. I never had this joint/bone pain before. Hopefully it is something that will go away. Good luck to you!
