]Action/Kinetics:
Peak plasma levels: 30-60 min. t1/2: 1 hr. Therapeutic plasma levels: 40 mcg/mL. Onset, anti-inflammatory effect: within 1 week; duration, anti-inflammatory effect: 1-2 weeks. Inactivated in liver and excreted in urine.
Uses:
Acute and chronic treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Investigational: Sunburn.
Special Concerns:
Use with caution during lactation. Dosage has not been determined in children less than 2 years of age.
Laboratory Test Alterations:
Tolmetin metabolites give a false + test for proteinuria using sulfosalicylic acid.

Dosage
•Capsules, Tablets
Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis.
Adults: 400 mg t.i.d. (one dose on arising and one at bedtime); adjust dosage according to client response. Maintenance: rheumatoid arthritis 600-1,800 mg/day in three to four divided doses; osteoarthritis 600-1,600 mg/day in three to four divided doses. Doses larger than 1,800 mg/day for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are not recommended.
Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
2 years and older, initial: 20 mg/kg/day in three to four divided doses to start; then, 15-30 mg/kg/day. Doses higher than 30 mg/kg/day are not recommended. Beneficial effects may not be observed for several days to a week.
