Classification:
Antifungal, vaginal
Action/Kinetics:
May exert its antifungal activity by disrupting cell membrane permeability leading to loss of essential intracellular materials. Also inhibits synthesis of triglycerides and phospholipids as well as inhibiting oxidative and peroxidative enzyme activity. When used for Candida terconazole inhibits transformation of blastospores into the invasive mycelial form.
Uses:
Vulvovaginitis caused by Candida. Ineffective in infections due to Trichomonas or Haemophilus vaginalis.
Special Concerns:
During lactation, consider discontinuing nursing or the drug. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children.
Side Effects:
GU: Vulvovaginal burning, irritation, or itching; dysmenorrhea, pain of the female genitalia. Miscellaneous: Headache (most common), body pain, photosensitivity, abdominal pain, chills, fever.
How Supplied:
Vaginal cream: 0.4%, 0.8%; Vaginal suppository: 80 mg
Dosage
•Vaginal Cream (0.4%, 0.8%)
One applicator full (5 g) intravaginally, once daily at bedtime for 7 consecutive days for the 0.4% cream and for 3 consecutive days for the 0.8% cream.
•Vaginal Suppository
One 80-mg suppository once daily at bedtime for 3 consecutive days. |
