]Action/Kinetics:
t1/2: 8.6 hr.
Uses:
UTIs caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, and Proteus vulgaris. Chancroid, inclusion conjunctivitis, adjunct in treating chloroquine-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum meningococcal meningitis for sulfonamide-sensitive group A strains, nocardiosis, with penicillin to treat acute otitis media caused by H. influenzae adjunct with pyrimethamine for toxoplasmosis in selected immunocompromised clients (e.g., those with AIDS, neoplastic disease, or congenital immune compromise), trachoma.
Special Concerns:
May be an increased risk of severe side effects in elderly clients.
How Supplied:
Tablet: 500 mg
Dosage
•Tablets
Mild to moderate infections.
Adults, initially: 2 g; then, 1 g in morning and evening.
Severe infections.
Adults, initially: 2 g; then, 1 g t.i.d. Infants over 2 months, initial: 50-60 mg/kg; then, 25-30 mg/kg in morning and evening, not to exceed 75 mg/kg/day. Alternative dosing: 50-60 mg/kg/day divided q 12 hr, not to exceed 3 g/24 hr.
