]Action/Kinetics:
Onset, IV: 1.3-3 min. Anesthetic blood concentration: 8-30 mcg/kg. t1/2: 2.5 hr. Allows appropriate oxygenation of the heart and brain during prolonged surgical procedures. May be used in children.
Uses:
Narcotic analgesic used as an adjunct to maintain balanced general anesthesia. To induce and maintain general anesthesia (with 100% oxygen), especially in neurosurgery or CV surgery.
Additional Contraindications
Use during labor.
Special Concerns:
Decrease dose in the obese, elderly, or debilitated client.
Additional Side Effects
Erythema, chills, intraoperative muscle movement. Extended postoperative respiratory depression.

Dosage

Analgesia.
Adults, individualized, usual initial: 1-2 mcg/kg with oxygen and nitrous oxide; maintenance: 10-25 mcg as required.
For complicated surgery.
Adults: 2-8 mcg/kg with oxygen and nitrous oxide; maintenance: 10-50 mcg.
To induce and maintain general anesthesia.
Adults: 8-30 mcg/kg with 100% oxygen and a muscle relaxant; maintenance: 25-50 mcg. Pediatric, less than 12 years: 10-25 mcg/kg with 100% oxygen; maintenance: 25-50 mcg.
Induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in children less than 12 years of age undergoing CV surgery.
Initial: 10-25 mcg/kg with 100% oxygen; maintenance: 25-50 mcg.
