Action/Kinetics: Produced by Streptomyces spectabilis. Only given IM. Peak plasma concentration: 100 mcg/mL (2-g dose) after 1 hr and 160 mcg/mL (4-g dose) after 2 hr. t1/2: 1.2-2.8 hr. Not significantly bound to protein. Excreted in urine.

Uses: Acute gonorrheal proctitis and urethritis in males and acute gonorrheal cervicitis and proctitis in females due to susceptible strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. For pharyngeal infections, use only in those intolerant to cephalosporins or quinolones. It is ineffective against pharyngeal infections and against syphilis; is a poor drug to choose when mixed infections are present.
